Coalition against the sale of NB Power grows its ranks

Members of the Coalition of New Brunswickers: NB Power Not For Sale held signs and waved at passing motorists in Fredericton on December 4th.December 4th marked the launch of the Fredericton Branch of the Coalition of New Brunswickers: NB Power Not For Sale.
Approximately 20 people braved the cold at the corner of Regent and Prospect streets to hold signs and banners indicating their opposition to the proposed sale of NB Power to Hydro Quebec. The din of horns from passing cars indicated that they were not alone in their opposition to the deal.
Tom Mann, Executive Director of the New Brunswick Union and founding member of the Coalition, was in attendance at the rally. “The government has illustrated just how important this deal is to a few people in the province,” said Mann. “It’s astounding the resources that they’re putting into their public relations, and more astounding and appalling I think--as a taxpayer in this province--that they are spending our money on an internationally renowned spin firm out of Washington, D.C.--Hill and Knowlton--whose client list included the Chinese government after Tiananmen Square; it included the accounting scandals and criminals of Enron; it included George Bush’s office to spin the Iraq war.”
“And now the province of New Brunswick is using that firm to spin this sale. They’re going to the ultimate level. Why do they have to go to that level to try to convince us that this deal is a good deal? Simply, because it’s not a good deal for New Brunswickers.”
Susie Proulx-Daigle, President of the New Brunswick Union was also in attendance. She noted that not only is the government spending substantial amounts of money on its public relations campaign, but that it is doing so at a time when cutbacks are being made in the public sector.
She stressed that New Brunswickers were not given a say in what decisions were made about NB Power despite the fact that as a public utility NB Power belongs to the people of New Brunswick.
“People are saying that Shawn’s not really running the province. Somebody else is running it for him and telling him what to do,” said Daigle. “What we’re hearing from people is that they feel that big companies are running the province right now and this [sale] is all for their benefit.”
Neil Cole, a graduate student at the University of New Brunswick, held a sign that read ‘NB Power Not for Sale’. He said that the manner in which this deal was brokered is typical of the current government’s arrogance in making decisions without engaging in meaningful public consultation or evaluating the impacts of decisions on the future of the province.
He also noted that the Liberals are not the only party to have entertained the possibility of selling off the province’s public utility. “I have very little faith [in the official opposition] because it was the Progressive-Conservatives under Bernard Lord that dismantled NB Power into multiple business enterprises. They laid the groundwork for this. So if they’re talking about defending a public enterprise it’s probably more empty words than real promises.”
Tom Mann is confident that New Brunswickers can stop this deal. “Business as usual, politics as usual, public policy as usual--that cycle needs to stop right here on this issue,” said Mann. “It could take just two or three people to turn this around. The sale does have to go to the Legislative Assembly. It’s going to require a majority vote of our sitting MLAs--the people that we elected in order to represent our best interests--and the Coalition will be calling on the MLAs to vote with their conscience and to vote with their head on their shoulders.”
